Montreval Hotels — six houses
Six privately held houses, kept small and staffed generously, for guests who are in no hurry.

The collection
Six houses, in six places we would go anyway. Each was bought because of where it stands, restored with the materials of that place, and is run by someone who lives there. Nothing is rolled out across the collection because it happened to work somewhere else.
We are not looking for a seventh with any urgency. When we describe ourselves as a small collection, that is a decision rather than a stage we are passing through.

We run about 2.4 staff per room, roughly twice the figure for our category. It is the most expensive decision we have made and the only one we have never revisited.
We close Sabaia in summer, we tell you when the sea is cold, and we say which rooms we would choose ourselves. A house that oversells itself only does it once.

We publish the months we think you should not come, which is the least a hotel can do for someone planning a year ahead.
The Verane Valley
A glacial lake, a larch forest and eleven months of weather.

Limestone cliffs, terraced lemons, and water you can see the bottom of.

Chalk ridges, old vines, and a village that eats at one o'clock.

Between twenty-two and forty-one rooms each. All six are owned outright and run by someone who lives in the place they stand.

Rates are per night for two, including breakfast and every tax, at every house. There is no second number later.

A five-course room under a hayloft at Verane. One long table and no choice at all at Aubris. A menu at Lindhavn written at a quarter past eight each morning, after the boats land.

A spring-fed bath cut into limestone. A hammam heated by wood. A cold plunge that is not a pool but a hole in a deck, opening into four hundred metres of fjord.
